King Sunny Ade’s guitar auctioned at N52m

  A vintage fender guitar owned by legendary Nigerian musician, King Sunny Ade, was on Sunday auctioned at N52.1 million in Lagos. The guitar which was auctiond by Dr. Jogun Onabanjo, Certified Auctioneer and Chief Executive of Onabanjo and Onabanjo & Co, is known to have been designed by Nigerian artist Victor Ehikamenor. The glittering artistic piece was revealed at the King Sunny Ade‘s  70th birthday concert tagged Sunny on Sunday, which had an audience comprising of Nigeria’s richest and top celebrities. The starting bid of nine million Naira was followed by a very competitive bid by the well-heeled audience consisting of influential businessmen such as Alhaji Aliko Dangote and Mr. Femi Otedola, and more closing at N52.1 million. How two Nigerians drowned in Malaysia

Two Nigerian students have been found dead in a river in Tasik Taman Negara Loagan Bunut, Miri Malaysia. The students, Amate Mohamed Amate, 26 and Emine-Imoh Daniel, 23 had been reported missing when a boat they were travelling in capsized on Sunday. FreeMalaysia.com quoted Sarawak Fire and Rescue Department director Nor Hisham Mohammad, saying the bodies of Amate and Emine-Imoh were found at 12.45pm and 5.15pm some meters away from the scene of accident. The corpse were sent to the Miri Hospital for a post-mortem. The two victims were among six students from Curtin University, Miri, Malaysia, conducting observation and research on wildlife in the lake area when the boat capsized. Four other students, one each from Oman, Zimbabwe, Nigeria, Malaysia and the skipper of the boat were reported to be safe. Gambia: ‘Jammeh plotting to use Nigerian lawyers to remain in office’

The Gambian President, Yahya Jammeh The Gambian Bar Association has raised the alarm that President Yahya Jammeh was plotting to use Nigerian lawyers to perpetuate himself in office after losing the presidential election last week. The association stated that Jammeh,  who rejected his loss of the presidential election  after initially accepting the outcome, was planning to bring to Gambia judicial officers from Nigeria to thwart the will of the Gambian electorates.  The GBA in a statement published by  Sahara reporters  on Monday, also said it had no confidence in the Gambian Chief Justice Emmanuel Fagbenle, a Nigerian, noting that he would take steps to extend the illegal regime of Jammeh. Adamawa residents cut off as youths vandalise telecoms stations

A telecoms-base-station - 360x350 Residents of three local government council areas of Adamawa State have been cut off from telecommunications services. The disconnection which affected communities in the three council areas of Ganye, Jada and Toungo, had forced many residents to travel as far as Mayo-Belwa and Yola the state capital for telephony service. The problem, according to one of the residents, Hamidu Lawal, who came to Yola from Jada for telephone service, has lingered for about a week. He said the situation was caused by the theft of two telecommunication masts belonging to Globacom by some youths in Kojoli, Jada local government council areas of the state. He said the youths had accused Globacom of defaulting in the payment of its ground rents where it erected one of its masts and a sub-station in Kojoli and Balauru respectively. Oil prices soar to $58 on global output cut deal

Oil Oil prices shot up over four per cent to their highest level since 2015 early on Monday after OPEC and other producers over the weekend in Vienna reached first output cut deal since 2001 . They jointly reduced output in order to rein in oversupply and prop up the market. Brent sweet crude futures, the international benchmark for oil prices, soared to 57.89 dollars per barrel in overnight trading between Sunday and Monday, its highest level since July 2015. U.S. West Texas Intermediate crude futures also hit a July 2015 high of 54.51 dollars a barrel. With the deal finally signed after a year,the market’s focus will now switch to compliance with the agreement. The Joint Admissions and Matriculation Board says arrangements have been concluded to have an interaction with owners of Computer Based Test centres in the country ahead of the 2017 UTME. The board’s Head, Media and Information, Dr Fabian Benjamin, made the disclosure in a statement made available to the  News Agency of Nigeria  on Monday in Lagos. According to the statement, the meeting which comes up on Tuesday at the University of Lagos is to fine tune all areas of challenges geared towards conducting a hitch-free examination in 2017. Some survivors of the Reigners Bible Church International Inc, Uyo building collapse have given a first-hand account of how the building collapsed on Saturday. One of the survivors, Eno Etim, who spoke with our correspondent, on Sunday, said the building collapsed shortly after a lady was called to lead the praise worship. Etim, who hails from Mbo Local Government Area of the state, said there was no foreboding of the monumental disaster that was waiting to happen. The housewife, who spoke shortly before she was moved out of the St. Luke’s General Hospital, Annua, Uyo, to the University of UYO Teaching, Uyo, said the congregation was dancing when the church collapsed. She said that she could not recall how she landed in the hospital, adding that an iron bar hit her at the back, sending her reeling on the floor before she passed out. Fire razes Edo shopping mall

The mall AN early morning fire on Sunday razed a popular shopping mall, Phill-Hallmark Supermarket, in Oredo Local Government Area of Edo State, destroying goods worth billions of naira.  It was gathered that the fire started at about 2am when only a few of the employees were present.  It was learnt that the inferno destroyed the four floors of the main building while an extension of the mall was partly burnt.  Goods worth billions of naira were said to have been affected by the fire.  The supermarket houses several sections, including a boutique, bakery, food and beverages as well as home appliances.  It was also said to have over 50 employees and was recently renovated.  When Southern City News got to the scene of the incident at about 9am, officials of the state fire service were seen battling to put out the fire.  Although it was learnt that firemen from the Nigerian Airforce and the University of Benin rushed to the scene, the inferno was...

Onu, Amaechi A Federal High Court in Abuja has granted leave to a group, Kingdom Human Rights Foundation, to commence its suit seeking an order for the arrest of the Minister of Transportation, Mr. Rotimi Amaechi, and his Science and Technology counterpart, Mr. Ogbonnaya Onu, over recent allegations levelled against them by two Justices of the Supreme Court. The plaintiff, in its substantive suit, asked the court to make an order of mandamus compelling the Department of State Services and the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission to “perform their statutory obligations” by immediately arresting and prosecuting the two ministers. Pastor makes members drink Dettol for healing

A South African cleric, Prophet Rufus Phala has made his church members drink disinfectant,  Dettol ,  in order to get healed.. Phala, a pastor with AK Spiritual Christian Church, Makgodu, Limpopo in the north eastern area of South Africa, instructed his followers to drink the disinfectant, while also acknowledging that it was dangerous to do so. “I know Dettol is harmful, but God instructed me to use it. I was the first one to drink it,” the pastor said in a video sighted by South Africa’s  Daily Sun. He also claimed he has been getting WhatsApp messages from people who say they have been healed by obeying his command of drinking the disinfectant. Dettol  is the trade name for a line of hygiene products manufactured by Reckitt Benckiser. Aminu Tambuwal seeking to stop a court action challenging the propriety of his nomination as the APC candidate for the 2015 Sokoto governorship election. Senator Umaru Dahiru and Aliyu Sanyinna had challenged the conduct of the primary election that produced Tambuwal as candidate of APC on the ground that it was fraught with fraud. The appellants were governorship aspirants on the APC platform in the 2015 general election. The appellants claimed that the primary election of APC conducted in Dec. 4, 2014 in Sokoto was fraudulent because the original list of the delegates for the primary election was swapped in favour of Tambuwal by some external forces. Zahra Buhari President Muhammadu Buhari’s family on Saturday disowned some photographs trending on social media and some conventional media said to be pre-wedding photographs of their daughter, Zahra, and Mohammed Indimi. In a statement by the Special Assistant on Media to the wife of the President, Adebisi Olumide-Ajayi, the family described the photographs as untrue and embarrassing to them. Olumide-Ajayi said the family would want the forthcoming marriage to remain a private affair. She also promised that official photographs of the wedding would be released at the appropriate time. The statement read, “It has come to the notice of the Buhari family that certain photographs are making the rounds both on social and conventional media claiming to be pre-wedding photographs of Zahra Buhari and Mohammed Indimi. “Not only are these photographs untrue, they are also a source of embarrassment to the couple.”

Gov escapes death as 200 die in Akwa Ibom church collapse

Photos: Etim Ekpimah The Governor of Akwa Ibom State, Mr. Udom Emmanuel, narrowly escaped death on Saturday as the building of Reigners’ Bible Church Int’l Inc, along Uyo Village Road, Uyo, the state capital, collapsed during service. The incident left about 200 worshippers dead. Sources said it took the efforts of the governor’s security officers to whisk him away to safety. He was said to have sustained a minor injury. SUNDAY PUNCH  learnt that the governor was in the church attending the ordination of the church’s Presiding Pastor, Bishop Elect Akan Weeks, when the building gave way few minutes before offering period. Photos: NAN There was panic in Maiduguri, the capital of Borno State on Sunday morning as two suicide bombers, a male and female detonated their explosives. Speaking on the incident, the spokesman of National Emergency Management Agency (NEMA), Sani Datti in a text message to our correspondent said: “A male and female suicide bomber have detonated explosives near Monday Market Maiduguri this morning (Sunday).” He said rescue workers were deployed to the scene to assist the injured. Datti said: “Only the two suicide bombers lost their lives while 17 persons were injured and evacuated to the Specialist Hospital Maiduguri.”

The suspects – Abdullahi Saliu, Babuga Adamu and Abubakar Gide – told  PUNCH Metro  that Bello got them angry after bringing N5.6m instead of the N10m agreed for the release of four expatriates earlier kidnapped by their gang. They said Bello was killed after he had been held for three days because he  allegedly refused to call his employer to pay the balance of N4.4m. The suspects were said to have committed the offence on November 8, 2016, at Rumukparale in the Obio/Akpor Local Government Area of the state. They were arraigned on three counts bordering on murder. Fake embassy found in Lagos, two Chinese arrested

The suspects The Lagos State Police Command says it has discovered a fake embassy operating in Lagos where many innocent members of the public had allegedly been defrauded. It was gathered that policemen attached to the Rapid Response Squad (RRS) had swooped on the ‘embassy’ and arrested two Chinese and two Nigerians. PUNCH Metro  learnt that the fake embassy was located at Golden Point and Suite on Duduyemi Street in Ejigbo, Lagos. The RRS said the Chinese – Liu Honyang, 47; and Sun Xinai, 49 – and their Nigerian collaborators – Oriyomi Olawale, 47 and Desmond Chinedu, 25 –  had been swindling Nigerians who had planned  to travel out of the country. It was learnt that the suspects issued mainly Trinidad and Tobago’s visas. Photos: Etim Ekpimah The Akwa Ibom State Governor, Udom Emmanuel, has ordered the immediate arrest of the contractors and engineers that constructed the  Reigners Bible Church International Inc,  Uyo, which collapsed on Saturday, killing scores of people. Specifically, one of the personal assistants to the governor on media, Mr. Aniekeme Finbarr, who spoke with  CNN’s  correspondent Becky Anderson, said the governor gave the order on Sunday. “They should be made to answer certain questions so that the state would be able to get to the root cause of the matter,” the governor was quoted as saying. The governor’s call came on the heels of a similar call by the Senate President, Dr. Bukola Saraki, for a probe of the disaster.
